Jack’s Hard Cider: Our History, Our President, Our Cider Maker

We know you love Jack’s Hard Cider—made from the freshest Pennsylvania apples grown right in our own orchards. But, how did the hard cider that you know and love come to fruition? We invite you to get to know Jack’s Hard Cider.

The Beginning

Our story begins over 50 years ago with our patriarch, John “Jack” Hauser. You may have heard of the company that he led to national recognition—Musselman Foods. John and his wife Helen owned the land where our apples are grown for many years and then passed the land down through the generations. Today, we still grow and process the apples that are used in Jack’s Hard Cider on the Hauser family-owned land.

Apples CiderIt Started with Wine

In the early 2000s, Jonathan Patrono, Jack and Helen’s grandson, embraced the idea of planting vineyards on the property and adding a winery for “value-added” agriculture. In 2005, Jonathan approached his mother and two aunts regarding growing grapes on the land. As a result, in 2006 vineyards were planted where some of the apple orchards were no longer thriving.

An underground winery production facility was developed, and on July 22, 2008, the Hauser Estate Winery tasting room opened. The tasting room has a 360-degree windowed view overlooking miles of farmland, orchards and forests and extending toward the national Civil War Battlefield in Gettysburg.

Along Came Cider

jacks teamCidermaking was always a part of the Hauser Estate Winery plan, with the first batches of Original Jack’s Hard Cider served at the winery’s tasting room in 2008.

In October 2013, we hired Jeff Musselman to take the cidermaking operation to the next level. Previously of Weyerbacher Brewing Co. and Tröegs Brewing Co., Jeff had been in the brewing business for over 10 years. Interested in supporting Pennsylvania agriculture and being closer to the product, Jeff decided to take the jump into crafting hard cider.

The Future

Jeff Musselman continues to be our cider maker and strives to develop new and seasonal ciders to expand our arsenal of flagship products. Check out our just-released Peach or Dry Hopped ciders, and stay tuned to our blog for more exciting releases scheduled for fall and winter 2015!
